Tips on Writing Report Cards

  1. Starting early can save you a lot of trouble later on. For instance, give yourself some time at the end of each week and reflect on your students’ performance. Write down notes about their strengths, weaknesses, class participation, etc. This will make it easier for you to include more personalized comments in their report cards.

  2. Brainstorm words you can use to describe each student. Start by making a list of their names and jot down one or two words that best describe them. This will help you avoid repetition to make each report card unique and customized.

  3. Strive to focus on the positives and highlight the qualities your students possess to help them build on those strengths and improve in the areas that need to be addressed. Be encouraging and professional. Not every report card has a glowing review but do try to keep it uplifting. Use supportive language that accentuates the student’s opportunity for growth and improvement.
